| Obverse description | Bare-headed portrait bust of Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse facing left, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and facial features. The effigy is strongly modeled in the neoclassical tradition, with the truncation of the neck cut cleanly at the lower field. The circular legend reads LUDWIG II GROSHERZOG VON HESSEN, arranged along the upper and right periphery. The field is smooth and unadorned, and the coin is bordered by a fine toothed inner rim. |
