Bavaria adopted the gulden as its primary silver unit following the monetary conventions of the South German states, which aligned their coinage systems in 1837 to facilitate trade across fractious political borders — a practical compromise that predated German unification by over three decades. Ludwig I's reign, however, ended abruptly in 1848 when revolutionary pressure and the scandal surrounding his affair with dancer Lola Montez forced his abdication in March of that year, cutting this issue short.
AKS 78 encompasses multiple dated varieties across the run, and specimens from 1848 — the abdication year — typically show lower surviving populations in choice condition.
