Additional information

The Bank van de Nederlandse Antillen gained the right to issue its own coinage following the 1954 Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which granted the Antilles autonomous status within the Kingdom rather than independence. The gulden series that followed operated in parallel with — but entirely separately from — the Dutch guilder, pegged at par but never interchangeable in ordinary commerce.

The 1970s issues coincided with the oil refinery boom centered on Curaçao, where the Shell refinery at Willemstad was among the largest in the world. Circulating coinage from this decade saw heavy use.
