West-Friesland was among the more assertive of the Dutch provincial mints, periodically issuing pattern and proof-quality pieces that tested both the tolerance of the States-General and the ambitions of local mint officials. This 1682 piece — struck at five-ducat weight but denominated as a single gulden — was almost certainly a presentation or demonstration piece rather than a serious denomination proposal, produced at a moment when Dutch monetary policy was still contending with the chaotic multiplicity of provincial coinages that the Munt-Edict of 1659 had failed to fully rationalize.
