| 表面の説明 | Bare-headed left-facing effigy of Duke Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curly hair and a short beard, the truncation of the neck falling cleanly at the lower field. The engraver's signature HELFRICHT appears in small capitals at the base of the truncation along the lower rim. A circular Latin legend runs along the upper and lateral periphery, separated from the effigy by a plain inner field and bounded by a fine toothed border. |

Bernhard II abdicated the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen in September 1866, just weeks after Prussia's decisive victory over Austria at Königgrätz effectively dissolved the old German Confederation and forced the hand of every minor sovereign who had backed the losing side. This 1854 issue predates that collapse by over a decade, struck during a period when the duchy's coinage still conformed to the Dresden Convention of 1838, which standardized the thaler-based system across the German states.
Saxe-Meiningen's mint output was modest by any measure, and gulden-denominated pieces from this reign are considerably scarcer than the parallel thaler issues.
