The Batavian Republic was proclaimed in January 1795 following the French-backed Patriot revolution that ousted the Stadtholder Willem V, who fled to England. In the immediate aftermath, centralized monetary authority had not yet been established, leaving individual provinces to continue striking under their own names — hence Overijssel producing this issue rather than a unified national coinage. The transition was short-lived; the 1798 constitution consolidated provincial autonomy and effectively ended independent provincial minting.
