The Batavian Republic was proclaimed in January 1795 following the French-backed Patriot revolution that overthrew the Stadtholderate and sent Willem V fleeing to England. Coinage continuity was politically urgent — the new republican government needed circulating silver quickly, and Holland's existing mint infrastructure was pressed into service almost immediately. KM#2.2 is the second die variety of this type, distinguished from KM#2.1 by subtle differences in the legend spacing and shield rendering.
The republic itself lasted only until 1806, when Napoleon dissolved it and installed his brother Louis as king of Holland.
