The K.K. Staats-Central-Casse — the Imperial-Royal State Central Cash Office — issued these small-denomination gulden notes as a direct response to the financial strain of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Austria's catastrophic defeat at Königgrätz in July of that year accelerated the hoarding of coin, and low-denomination state notes were pushed into circulation to fill the gap left by vanishing silver.
The 1 Gulden denomination was the workhorse of everyday transactions, meaning surviving examples in any decent condition are genuinely uncommon — these circulated hard.
