| Reverse description | A draped female figure, representing the personification of the city or Justice, is depicted standing three-quarters left, wearing a crown and long classical robes. She raises her right hand aloft holding a hammer or sceptre, while her left arm rests upon a tall rectangular plinth or altar. Her feet rest upon a small object in the lower field. The encircling Latin legend HAC NITIMVR HANC TVEMVR runs around the periphery, translating as 'On her we lean, her we defend,' referencing the city's allegorical protector. The bold relief and fluid drapery reflect the vigorous baroque engraving style prevalent in Dutch civic coinage of the late seventeenth century. |
