Guinea-denominated notes are rare in Scottish banking history — the guinea as a unit of account persisted in professional and commercial transactions long after gold guinea coins had effectively disappeared from everyday use. The Royal Bank of Scotland issued this 1758 note during a period of fierce competition with the Bank of Scotland, when both institutions were aggressively expanding their branch networks and note circulation to capture trade flowing through the central Lowlands.
The guinea denomination (21 shillings rather than the round pound sterling) signals this was almost certainly aimed at mercantile and legal settlement rather than wage payment or retail trade. Few Scottish guinea notes of any bank survive from this period.
