François Joseph Lefebvre was granted the Duchy of Danzig in 1807 following the city's siege and surrender, though he never actually governed it — the title was honorific, the revenue real, the administrative authority negligible. The Free City came under direct French control, and this trial strike dates to the period when Napoleon's continental system was already fracturing under the strain of the Russian campaign.
Gold trial strikes for base-metal circulation issues are rare survivors of the proofing process. Most were melted. That this one exists in gold at 3.16 g for a denomination worth a fraction of a pfennig tells you everything about how the occupation authorities spent their metallurgical budgets.
