Danzig had been a Free City under Napoleonic protection since 1807, administered as a siege prize following Marshal Lefebvre's brutal ten-week assault that forced the city's Prussian and Russian defenders to capitulate in May of that year. Lefebvre, created Duke of Danzig immediately after the victory, nominally governed the territory, though real authority rested with French-appointed officials. The city's coinage was issued under this arrangement — a French-controlled entity technically independent of both Prussia and the French Empire proper.
The run across 1809–1812 ended when Napoleon's Russian campaign collapsed and Danzig again became a siege target, this time by allied forces from 1813 onward.
