Issued specifically for use by Austrian imperial forces during the campaigns against Revolutionary France, this copper grossus was part of a broader effort to maintain functional small-denomination coinage within military supply chains as the war disrupted normal currency circulation in the Low Countries and along the Rhine frontier. Field armies operating far from Vienna required a reliable medium for petty transactions — pay settlements, sutler purchases, and the like — that civilian Habsburg coinage couldn't always satisfy at the front.
The KM# C4 designation reflects its status as a military subsidiary issue rather than a general circulation piece, which explains its relative obscurity despite the turbulent and well-documented period of its production.
