Carl of Saxony held the Duchy of Courland under increasingly fraught circumstances — his installation as duke in 1758 had been engineered largely through Russian pressure, and his tenure remained dependent on St. Petersburg's goodwill throughout. This grossus was struck at Mitau during a period when the duchy's nominal autonomy was more diplomatic fiction than political reality. The curved shields without wreath distinguishes it from closely related dies of the same issue, a distinction catalogued separately by Kopicki.
