Albrecht I's brief reign ended with his murder at the hands of his nephew Johann von Schwaben in 1308 — a killing so brazen it occurred in broad daylight at a river crossing near Brugg. His monetary policy had been equally aggressive during his lifetime: he fought the Rhenish electoral princes repeatedly over control of toll revenues and minting rights, and his coinage reflects the administrative consolidation he pursued as both Duke of Austria and King of the Romans after defeating Adolf of Nassau at the Battle of Göllheim in 1298.
