John (Giovanni) and Luchino Visconti ruled Milan jointly following the death of their brother Azzone in 1339 — an uncomfortable co-signoria that lasted until Luchino's death in 1349, almost certainly by poison administered by his wife Catherine Visconti. The joint coinage of this period is historically anomalous; Milanese mint practice rarely accommodated shared authority so directly in its silver issues. Giovanni, Archbishop of Milan, brought ecclesiastical authority to the partnership while Luchino held the military command, a division that kept an uneasy peace for a decade.
MEC XII records only a handful of die combinations for this type.
