| Obverse description | Within a beaded border enclosing a quadrilobe, the Bolognese lion rampant walks to the left, depicted in a vigorous Gothic style with its body erect and forepaws raised. The lion grasps a tall staff surmounted by a flowing banner or vexillum, emblematic of civic authority. The design is framed by an inner toothed or cable border forming the quadrilobe surround. The circumferential legend in Gothic uncial characters reads BONONIA DOCET, the celebrated civic motto affirming Bologna's role as seat of learning. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hammered medieval coinage. |
