Additional information

Giacomo VII Appiani inherited Piombino in 1594 under Spanish suzerainty, the tiny coastal lordship having passed through enough dynastic turbulence that its coinage output was never large. His reign lasted only until 1603, cut short not by politics but by death, leaving a correspondingly thin numismatic record. This grosso falls within a two-year window of his tenure when the mint was briefly active.

Piombino's silver issues from this period are genuinely scarce — the principality's mint struck intermittently at best, dependent on metal supply and political circumstance rather than any regular programme.
