| Reverse description | A Cross of Jerusalem — a large central cross potent accompanied by a smaller crosslet in each of the four quarters — occupies the central field. The cross is a dynastic and religious emblem associated with the Gonzaga rulers and their aspirations to crusading prestige. The entire device is framed within two concentric beaded or wreath borders, mirroring the decorative scheme of the obverse. The hammered flan gives the design an irregular, slightly convex appearance characteristic of early seventeenth-century Italian billon coinage. |
