| Additional information |
Clement XIII, born Carlo della Torre di Rezzonico, spent much of his pontificate under siege — not militarily, but diplomatically. The suppression of the Jesuits dominated his reign; France, Spain, Portugal, and Naples each expelled the order in turn, and Clement refused every demand to dissolve it universally, dying in 1769 before the pressure could fully break him. The VTERE QVASI HOMO FRVGI reverse legend — "use it as a frugal man" — reflects the moral economy theology the papal mint occasionally worked into small silver denominations.
The MIR reference distinguishes four die varieties across this four-year emission.
