Clement XI's pontificate was defined less by fiscal generosity than by catastrophic political miscalculation — his 1713 bull Unigenitus, condemning Jansenist propositions, fractured Catholic Europe and drew France into open ecclesiastical rebellion. The DEDIT PAVPERIBVS legend, drawn from Psalm 111, had been a recurring Papal mint motto long before this issue and carried formulaic weight rather than specific charitable intent.
The Berman and Muntoni references list two die varieties for this type, distinguished by minor legend spacing differences rather than substantive design changes.
