The papal insignia is rendered in fine relief with delicate rococo scrollwork. Benedict XIV — Prospero Lambertini — was among the most intellectually engaged popes of the eighteenth century, corresponding openly with Voltaire and pushing through a quiet reform of the Church's approach to usury that had direct implications for how papal finances were managed. The DISPERSIT DEDIT PAVPERIBVS legend, drawn from Psalm 112, was a deliberate choice: Benedict made poor relief a visible priority of his pontificate and used coinage as one vehicle for that message.
