Antivari (modern Bar, Montenegro) struck its own civic coinage during a period of precarious autonomy, caught between Venetian expansion down the Adriatic coast and Serbian dynastic fragmentation following the Ottoman victory at Kosovo in 1389. Balsa III, the last of the Balšić dynasty, formally submitted Antivari to Venice in 1421 — effectively ending the city's independent minting authority. These grossi are among the final emissions of an autonomous Adriatic commune that would not strike coin again under its own name.
