| Reverse description | Full-length frontal figure of a bishop saint, identified as San Donato, patron saint of Arezzo, depicted in pontifical vestments including a mitre and cope, raising his right hand in benediction and holding a crozier in his left. The figure is rendered in the schematic Romanesque-Gothic style typical of central Italian episcopal coinage of the mid-thirteenth century. A beaded inner circle frames the saintly effigy, while the outer legend P P S · DO NATVS. ❀ identifies the patron saint. The coin exhibits the characteristic broad, flat flan and bold relief of hammered grossi of this period. |
