Beschrijving voorzijde Enthroned frontal figure of Tsar Ivan Sratsimir, depicted in regal robes and wearing a crown, holding royal regalia in each hand, rendered in the flat, stylized manner characteristic of late medieval Bulgarian hammered coinage. The figure is seated on a throne visible in low relief, with decorative elements flanking the composition in the field. A beaded inner border frames the central design. The Cyrillic legend encircling the field reads the ruler's name and title.

Aanvullende informatie

Ivan Sratsimir ruled Vidin as a semi-independent tsar after his father Ivan Alexander partitioned the Bulgarian state around 1356, effectively splitting what remained of the empire between two sons. The division was partly dynastic calculation, partly a response to mounting Ottoman pressure that made centralized control increasingly untenable. Sratsimir maintained his court at Vidin until 1396, when Sigismund of Hungary's crusading force was shattered at Nicopolis and the Ottomans absorbed the Vidin tsardom — ending both his reign and Bulgarian imperial coinage in a single campaign season.
