Christian Ulrich ruled Württemberg-Oels, one of the fragmented Silesian duchies that had passed into the hands of a Württemberg cadet line in 1649. This tiny silver piece circulated during a period when Silesia remained under Habsburg suzerainty following the Peace of Westphalia, leaving minor dukes like Christian Ulrich the right to strike coin but little else in the way of genuine political autonomy. The Gröschl — a regional denomination rooted in the old Groschen tradition — was a workhorse of small commerce in an area where coinage from a dozen petty authorities mingled freely.
