Frankfurt's groschen tournois issues were struck in imitation of the French gros tournois, a coin type that originated at the abbey of Saint-Martin de Tours and became the dominant silver denomination in western European trade from the late 13th century onward. Frankfurt, sitting astride major Rhine and Main trade routes, had practical reasons to produce coinage compatible with French commercial standards — merchants demanded it.
