| Obverse description | Three-quarter facing effigy of Charlemagne, crowned and bearded, depicted frontally from the waist up against a plain field. The imperial eagle of Aachen, displayed with spread wings, forms the body of the figure, with the shield of Aachen arms shown below. In his right hand Charlemagne holds a sceptre surmounted by a fleur-de-lis, and in his left an orb surmounted by a cross. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin uncial legend running continuously in the outer margin. |
