| Beschrijving voorzijde | Three-quarter frontal effigy of Charlemagne (Carolus Magnus), depicted as Holy Roman Emperor, holding an orb in one hand and a scepter in the other. The imperial arms of Aachen appear before the figure. The design is rendered in the Gothic style typical of late 14th- to early 15th-century Rhenish coinage. A beaded inner circle separates the central effigy from the surrounding outer legend. The legend, in uncial script, identifies the figure as the sanctified emperor Charlemagne. |
