| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse displays the crowned coat of arms of the Principality of Lippe, consisting of two oval escutcheons arranged side by side beneath a princely crown. The dexter shield bears the rose of Lippe (five-petalled), while the sinister shield depicts the eagle of Sternberg. The arms are supported by elaborate mantling or drapery on either side, rendered in a baroque heraldic style typical of early nineteenth-century German coinage. No legend appears on the obverse, with the entire field occupied by the armorial composition. |

Lippe was among the smallest of the German states — a county elevated to a principality in 1789 — and its coinage output was correspondingly limited. Paul Alexander Leopold II ruled from 1802 until his death in 1851, making 1804 one of his earliest issues. The principality's minuscule size meant it relied heavily on neighboring minting facilities, with Lippe issues of this period struck under contract rather than at any dedicated local mint.
