The encircling Latin legend reads IOH: GEORG: D: G: DVX SAX: IVL: CL: ET MONT:, identifying the issuer as John George I, Duke of Saxony, Jülich, Cleves, and Berg, by the Grace of God. The overall design is characteristic of the crude, high-relief hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century Saxon small silver coinage. |
