Beschrijving voorzijde Central field displays the crowned and elaborately mantled arms of Anhalt, featuring the quartered shield with the bear passant of Anhalt prominently rendered in relief. The armorial achievement is flanked by decorative foliate scrollwork and supported by heraldic ornaments. A royal crown surmounts the shield. The surrounding legend in Latin reads IOACHIM ERNEST D G PRIN ANH, identifying the issuing prince Joachim Ernest by the grace of God Prince of Anhalt. The entire design is struck by hand in the typical flat-relief hammered style characteristic of late sixteenth-century German groschen coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Joachim Ernest consolidated the fragmented Anhalt territories under his sole rule in 1570, following years of partition among competing branches of the Ascanian house. This groschen dates from just three years into that reunification — early enough that the minting authority itself was still asserting its reconstituted legitimacy. The Principality would be subdivided again among his sons after his death in 1586, making issues of his unified reign a distinct and finite coinage group.
