George Frederick of Brandenburg-Ansbach administered Prussia as regent from 1578 following the incapacitation of Duke Albert Frederick, who suffered severe mental illness throughout his adult life. The regency was deeply contested — Poland, as the suzerainty power over ducal Prussia, had to formally sanction the arrangement, and George Frederick's authority remained legally ambiguous for much of the period. These groschen were struck across that entire contested span, their minting authorized under circumstances that were never entirely settled.
