Additional information

Ernest III ruled Schaumburg-Pinneberg during a period of dynastic fragility — the county had no male heir beyond him, and his death in 1622 extinguished the main Schauenburg line entirely, triggering a territorial partition among neighboring powers including Hesse-Kassel and Denmark. These groschen were struck in the final years before that collapse, making them effectively the last regular coinage of an independent county that had existed since the twelfth century.
