Albert of Hohenzollern was the last Grand Master of the Teutonic Order to rule Prussia as a monastic state. These groschen were struck during the final years of that order's secular authority over the territory — Albert converted to Lutheranism in 1525 and, on Luther's personal advice, dissolved the Prussian branch of the Order and transformed it into the hereditary Duchy of Prussia, becoming its first duke. The coins of 1519–1520 predate that transformation by only a few years, issued while the Order was still nominally a crusading institution with functioning mints at Königsberg.
