Obverse description The city arms of Hildesheim occupy the central field, displaying the municipal shield surmounted by an elaborate mantled helm bearing a half-figure crest of a wild man or similar heraldic figure issuing from the top. Decorative acanthus-style scrollwork flanks the shield on both sides. The legend is arranged around the periphery in two segments separated by the shield composition, reading MONO and RE to the right and IP and HILD to the left, abbreviated references to 'Moneta Nova Reipublicae Hildesiensis' (New Coin of the Republic of Hildesheim). The overall design is characteristic of early seventeenth-century German municipal coinage in the hammered tradition.
