Obverse description A bold fleur-de-lis, the civic emblem of Strasbourg, occupies the center of the coin, set within a raised ornamental eight-lobed (octolobed) frame formed by a series of connected arcs. The fleur-de-lis is rendered in high relief with characteristic Gothic stylization, its central finial and flanking scrolls clearly defined. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the outer legend, which runs along the periphery of the coin. The surrounding field between the octolobed frame and the beaded border is plain. The overall design reflects the Gothic artistic conventions prevalent in late medieval Alsatian municipal coinage.
