Obverse description Within an inner circle formed by a rope-style beaded border, a large stylised monogram of Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) occupies the central field, rendered in bold relief with pronounced angular strokes characteristic of Hohenstaufen-era Italian coinage. A circular legend reading IMPERATOR runs between the inner beaded border and an outer circle of graining. The hammered flan presents an irregular outline typical of medieval Italian grossi.
