Obverse description Central field displays a facing bust of Duchess Mathilda (Mechteld) of Guelders set within a beaded inner circle, the figure depicted wearing a crested helmet surmounted by a fleur-de-lis crown, with a small heraldic shield at the breast. The bust is rendered in a bold, somewhat archaic Gothic style characteristic of late 14th-century Low Countries hammered coinage. Flanking the bust are small pellets or rosettes in the field. The surrounding legend in uncial Latin reads: MECHTELD DVX GELR Z CON 3VT, identifying the ruler as Mathilda, Duchess of Guelders and Countess of Zutphen, separated by quatrefoil stops.
