William V ruled Holland from 1354 until his mental incapacity forced his brother Albert to assume governance in 1358 — a fraternal power struggle that dragged on legally for decades, with William nominally retaining his title until his death in 1389. This groat was struck in the final year of that prolonged fiction, when William existed as count in name only while Albert of Bavaria administered the county in practice. The Bavarian shield reference in the type name reflects Albert's actual authority bleeding into the coinage.
