Richard III's coinage was reorganized almost immediately after his accession in 1483, with the sun and rose mintmark distinguishing this third type from earlier issues. The Tower mint was the sole producer during this period, operating under tight royal oversight as Richard worked to consolidate a regime that remained politically contested from the outset. His entire reign lasted just over two years — ended at Bosworth in August 1485 — making any issue attributable specifically to the 1483–84 window genuinely scarce by survival statistics alone.
North 1679 is among the more elusive Ricardian groat varieties. The sun and rose marks were retired with the subsequent type.
