Obverse description Central shield bearing the quartered royal arms of England and France, set within a beaded inner circle. The shield is superimposed over a voided long cross whose terminals each bear three pellets. The surrounding legend, rendered in Lombardic Gaelic lettering, is divided into four segments by the arms of the cross. The overall design reflects the standard hammered coinage style of the late medieval English and Irish mints under Richard III.
