| Beschrijving voorzijde | The field is dominated by the elaborate tenfold quartered shield of Austria-Burgundy, displaying the combined heraldic arms of the issuing house in a boldly rendered medieval style. The complex escutcheon, comprising quartered and impaled coats of arms including the Austrian fess, the Burgundian flint and steel, and additional dynastic quarterings, fills the entire flan. A circular Gothic legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the shield, interrupted by a cross at the top and punctuated by fleurs-de-lis or rosette stops. The overall composition reflects the ambitious dynastic claims of Philip the Handsome as Archduke of Austria and Count of Holland. The hammered flan exhibits characteristic irregular edges and slightly uneven relief typical of late fifteenth-century Low Countries billon coinage. |
