| Descrizione del dritto | Central field depicts the rampant lion of Flanders facing left, rendered in high relief in the Gothic heraldic tradition. The lion is contained within a beaded inner circle, beyond which runs the circular legend in uncial characters. The outer border consists of twelve roundels, each enclosing a stylised holly leaf or rosette motif, separated by small cusps, creating an elaborate Gothic decorative frame characteristic of Flemish coinage of the mid-14th century. |

Louis I of Nevers spent much of his reign in a bind between his feudal overlord, the French crown, and the economic reality that Flemish wool towns — Ghent, Bruges, Ypres — depended entirely on English trade. When Edward III embargoed wool exports to Flanders in 1336 to force the county's hand, the urban guilds effectively revolted, and Jacob van Artevelde took control of Ghent, steering Flanders toward an English alliance Louis never formally endorsed. The count died at Crécy in 1346 fighting for France, against the interests of virtually everyone he governed.
