| 表面の説明 | Central plain cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, its arms extending to the circle's edge and dividing the field into four equal quadrants. Surrounding the inner circle is an intermediate legend band bearing the title of the duke of Brabant, itself enclosed between two beaded borders. An outer legend band carries the religious invocation in Gothic Latin lettering. The overall design follows the standard Flemish-Brabantine gros tournois typology of the early fourteenth century. |

John II ruled Brabant from 1294 until his death in 1312, and his groat coinage belongs to a critical moment in the monetization of the southern Low Countries — the period immediately following the Flemish groat reforms that made the denomination the dominant silver unit across the entire region. Maastricht, a dual-jurisdiction city split between the Duke of Brabant and the Prince-Bishop of Liège, operated as a minting place precisely because of that shared sovereignty: each lord jealously maintained mint rights there as a matter of political standing, not just fiscal necessity.
