The shield is boldly engraved in the hammered style, with the lion clearly articulated despite the irregular strike. The peripheral legend in Latin, OPPIDVM : EDINBVRGI, denotes Edinburgh as the place of issue, with pellet stops separating the words. The overall composition is typical of James V groats struck at the Edinburgh mint during the second coinage. |
