| Beschrijving keerzijde | A bold long voided cross extends to the edge of the coin, dividing the reverse into four quarters. Alternate quarters contain a six-pointed mullet (star) and a group of three pellets arranged in triangular formation, a dispositon typical of the Type IV groat coinage of James IV. Each quarter is further adorned with a beaded inner arc following the curvature of the coin, lending the design a structured, compartmentalised appearance consistent with Scottish late medieval hammered silver. The two-line circular legend, in uncial Latin characters, is divided by the arms of the cross and reads EXVRGAT : DEVS : DISIPENT : I : VILLA : EDINBVRG : IZ :, translating as 'Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered — Town of Edinburgh', with the mint name confirming production at the Edinburgh mint. |
