| Obverse description | Facing bust of King James IV within a beaded inner circle, rendered in the bold, somewhat stylised manner characteristic of late 15th-century Scottish hammered coinage. The king wears a crown adorned with three fleurs-de-lis and small pellet points, with notably large, prominent eyelids lending the effigy a distinctive archaic quality. The bust is flanked by the encircling legend separated by pellet stops. The field surrounding the portrait is plain, with the beaded border framing the entire design. |

| Reverse description | A long voided cross extends to the beaded inner circle, dividing the reverse into four quarters. In alternating quarters appear a crown and a grouping of pellets arranged in a trefoil pattern, the standard Type IIb arrangement for this issue. The intervening quarters are plain. The whole is contained within a beaded inner circle, with the reverse legend running between the inner and outer beaded borders, punctuated by pellet stops and divided by the arms of the cross. |
