| Beschrijving voorzijde | Three-quarter facing portrait bust of King James III rendered in a naturalistic, Renaissance-influenced style distinctive of this issue. The king is depicted with flowing hair and without a crown, a hallmark of the so-called 'realistic portrait' groats of his reign. An annulet is positioned on the inner circle immediately to the left of the royal effigy. The portrait is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the surrounding legend reading IACOBVS DEI GRACIA REX SCOTORVM in Latin uncial lettering. This portrait type is celebrated as among the finest and most artistically accomplished coin portraits of medieval Scotland. |
