Obverse description Facing crowned bust of James III within a beaded inner circle, the king depicted in a stylised Gothic manner with long flowing hair falling to the shoulders and a prominent trefoil crown. The effigy is rendered in high relief characteristic of late medieval Scottish hammered coinage, with a broad, frontally presented face. A beaded border frames the inner field, with the royal legend disposed in gothic uncial lettering around the outer circumference. Small mullets or stops punctuate the legend between words.
